the future of the web is mot necessarily who controls search, but who controls the “starting point” for most people’s web session.
No matter where you start on the web, when you want to search, you're going to use a search-box. If that box is owned by the 'starting point' provider, you're right, they'll control a set amount of the market share
But the web as a whole is too large a scope to consider in this context, with respect to search market share, which MS obviously wants (in addition to 'owning the desktop' on as many platforms as possible), gaining share is as much about winning hearts and minds of the surfing public as it is about worming their way into search-box control (see my most recent post, the problems with marketing search).

while MSN is trying ro gain market share, other companies are innovating elsewhere. To me the future of the web is mot necessarily who controls search, but who controls the "starting point" for most people's web session. Currently it IS search engines, Soon it may be something else completely.

Smart phone browsers and interfaces, apps... We're in a whole new territory here. Google and Microsoft Are both competing for marketshar with Apple. It will be interesting to see what happens, but Bing should market something specific to smart phones and maybe it already has, but if I haven't heard about it they're not really doing a good job :P
